Beautiful Luxury

Blue Run small batch Golden Rye Whiskey is Blue Run’s inaugural Rye expression. Named for both the distinct color of the choice grains that were used in the creation process and the accolades that the whiskey has garnered. Most notably, Gold medal winner at the SF World Spirits Competition.

Making a run for it

If you’re a whisky enjoyer, you’ve probably heard of a company making big waves in the industry with their first 3 bourbon whiskey releases.

The company, Blue Run Spirits.

They’ve won best in class for their 13.5 and 14 year old bourbons at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. They’ve placed Jim Rutledge (of Four Roses fame) in charge of selecting their sourced barrels and distilling their new make. It seems they are on a path to greatness with bourbons.

Then they announced their first rye whiskey. I love rye whiskey, especially now that we’ve settled down into the cold winter months here in Canada. With this announcement and working with my friends at Evergreen Beverage and Northern Bourbon, I was able to secure a bottle of Blue Run Kentucky Straight Golden Rye Whiskey. Will this non-age stated rye at 95 proof (47.5% ABV) stand up. It’s time to dive in and find out.

The Review

The Sniff

Wonderful baking spices, black pepper, rye bread and just a hint of spearmint and licorice. A little deeper and you find the sweeter brown sugar, ripe pear and some plums.

The Sip

Mmmm, those baking spices and rye bread are right there up front with some honey and caramel. A little bit of fresh cut grass or hay as I breathe out. Just a touch of spearmint and licorice come through, oh so subtly.

The Finale

Dark sweet fruit fades as black pepper builds towards a long finish for a rye of this proof. The oaky pepper notes begin to blend with rye that lingers while it dries with just a touch of that rye heat.

The Wrap-up

I popped the cork on this expression with both high and low expectations. Knowing the backgrounds of the partners creating this whiskey and what they’ve put into the branding and marketing, it would sell quickly, make them lots of money and they could move on to their next endeavor. Then you add Jim Rutledge to this group and his name, knowledge, palate – it’s got to be good liquid. Enough of my ramblings. This rye has some great depth to it from start to finish. While I’m not a fan of spearmint in my rye, it was subtle enough on my palate to not turn me away. I was definitely a fan of the rye bread flavors that came through. This is a delicious rye that makes you want to pour “just one more dram.”
