Blended Scotch

Sublte Smoke

Caol Ila

Fire consumes everything it touches. It melts steel to hone the sharpest, deadliest blade. Fire courses through the veins of House Targaryen and is made flesh in the form of its dragons. With fire in their blood the Targaryene dragons breathe ferocious flames. Like a scorching blaze, they roar their verse of A Song Of Ice and Fire.

A whisky best enjoyed neat

My favourite Johnnie Walkers are the 12 year old Black and the Double Black (NAS), they’re just better because of the peat. When I came across A Song of Fire, I had to try it. Johnnie Walker’s amazing blending, with Caol Ila peat? I hope this is a smoke and peat bomb. Let’s dive in and find out.

The Review

The Sniff

Easy on the nose. Citrus, dark fruit leads to black pepper and sulfur. Diving deeper there’s a sweet peat with apples and cinnamon.

The Sip

Very light sweet peat smoke without any brine, a hint of bourbon moving to graham crackers and light oak.

The Finale

A medium finish, that seems like bourbon moving to a peat that fades into white pepper. As the finish ends it begins to dry my mouth.

The Wrap-up

Overall the Song of Fire is an easy dram. It’s not going to hit your palate and blow you away with spice, heat and burn. Picture yourself walking into the village the next day after the dragon has left, smelling the smoldering wood and carnage from the attack.
