Blended Scotch

Clynelish Malt

Smooth

Ice shapes mountains and stops rivers. It’s an unforgiving force that hardens everything it touches. Ice is embodied by House Stark, giving the North strength like no other kingdom. The Stark sigil, a Direwolf, bares its fangs and warns that Winter Is Coming. Like and icy Northern Wind, it howls its verse of A Song Of Ice and Fire.

A whisky made for ice

Johnnie Walker is known for it’s blends, they know what their audience likes and they don’t stray to far from that smooth, non-abrasive approach to their expressions. Did they stray from this notion with A Song of Ice? A dram that emboldens everything that is House Stark? Let’s dive in and find out.

The Review

The Sniff

Clean and easy on the nose. A lovely blend of butterscotch, vanilla and light oak come through up front. This is followed by orange peel, banana and light honey.

The Sip

Delicious citrus, with lemon meringue pie sweetness come through. These are perfectly offset against orange peel, dried fruit and just a hint of smoke.

The Finale

Citrus and toffee meld into a sweet light corn whisky with a touch of sherry and leaves you with white pepper that lingers for 30-45 seconds.

The Wrap-up

This is expression from Johnnie Walker is, as the name would suggest, best served over ice. It’s an easy introductory dram for a whisky starter, but may lack the depth of a seasoned enjoyer. If they had brought the ABV up closer to a cask strength, I feel the name “A Song Of Ice” would have been much more aligned than the gentle thaw I found in the bottle.
